16 Year old boy walks after corrective surgery of Spine......

Mr. Mohamed Meshari from Srilanka can now walk with a straight back - SCOLIOSIS CORRECTION: PERFORMANCE OF A COMPLEX SURGERY ON THE SPINE – March 02nd, 2012 GLOBAL HEALTH CITY, CHENNAI.

The goal of a spine surgery in correction of scoliosis is to ensure that further deformity is prevented by fusion of the spine. Scoliosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine, affects about over millions of people across the world and can limit activity, cause debilitating pain, reduce respiratory function and diminish self-esteem. In addition to scoliosis, Dr K Sridhar and his team treat a multitude of spinal disorders including lumbar stenosis, lumbar fusion, vertebrectomy for spinal cord tumors, and similar problems in the spine and Spinal cord.

PATIENT MEDICAL CONDITION Mr. Meshari, a 16 year old boy presented with a bent back (Scoliosis), something that he grew with from a young age. His sister too had a bent back and had that surgically corrected some years back in the UK. While he was able to move about normally and was going to school, his posture was suffering. He and his parents consulted Dr K Sridhar, Chief of Brain and Spine Surgery at Global Health City Chennai, who advised that surgical correction needed to be done at the earliest to get the best possible result to prevent respiratory complications. The surgery at this stage was a complex one as the spine was bent quite a bit and that a complete correction was not possible.

TREATMENT AT GLOBAL HEALTHCITY The surgery was performed at the Global Health City Chennai by Dr Sridhar and his team of Spine surgeons. The surgery was done in 2 stages. In the first stage the chest was opened and the bend in the spine was corrected in a highly tricky surgical procedure. After 4 days the second procedure was performed from the back, when screws were placed in the spine and the curvature of the spine was corrected. The surgeries took approximately 8-12 hours each time and any wrong move or extra force in straightening the spine would mean that the boy would be paralysed waist down for the rest of his life. Once the major work was done the Neuro-anaesthesia team led by Dr Ponniah performed a "wake-up" test to see if any damage had been done to the nerves and spinal cord.

Luckily enough there was none. The surgery was successful with an improvement of more than 60% of the curve. The boy is now going home with his spine strong and straight. Commenting on the occasion Dr. K Sridhar, Chief of Brain and Spine Surgery and Director, Institute of Neurosciences and Spinal Disorders at Global Health City said “These days there is a whole new world of scoliosis treatment possibilities to identify which kids are most at risk, and also allows for study of which treatment has the most effect on altering the natural course of the scoliosis.” Commenting on the rare scoliosis surgery Dr. Uma Nambiar, CEO, Global Health City said “Global Health City is at the forefront of the latest in brain and spine surgery.
